Speech Delay vs. Language Delay: What Is the Difference?

A plain-language guide to speech sounds, understanding and expressive language.

Published by Langley Speech Therapy Inc. • Updated September 12, 2026

Speech and language are related but different

Speech is the production of sounds and words. Language is the system we use to understand and share meaning through words, sentences, gestures, signs, pictures or an AAC device. A child may have difficulty in one area or both.

A speech sound example

A child may know exactly what they want to say and use age-appropriate sentences, but unfamiliar people struggle to understand the sounds. This can point toward a speech sound concern.

A language example

Another child may pronounce sounds clearly but use short sentences, have difficulty learning new words or struggle to follow directions. This can point toward receptive or expressive language needs.

Why assessment matters

Different patterns need different supports. A speech-language pathologist looks at the whole communication profile and chooses goals based on function, development and family priorities.

Concerned about your child’s communication? A consultation can help you decide what to do next. Contact Langley Speech Therapy.
