Articulation & Speech Sound Therapy

Speech sound differences can affect how easily a child is understood. Therapy targets the specific sound patterns affecting clarity while protecting confidence and participation.

Speech sound concerns

Families may notice omitted sounds, substitutions, unclear longer words, or a pattern where teachers and peers frequently ask the child to repeat. Some differences are developmental; others benefit from assessment and direct support.

How therapy works

The clinician identifies the sound pattern, selects meaningful targets and builds accuracy from simple practice into words, sentences and conversation. Practice is short, positive and connected to real communication.

Home practice that fits

A few minutes of well-chosen practice is often more useful than long drills. Families receive specific cues and activities so they know what to reinforce—and what not to correct repeatedly.

What happens first

We begin by learning about the concern, the child’s strengths, relevant history and the situations where communication is easiest or hardest. Recommendations are individualized after that conversation or assessment.

Educational information only: This page cannot determine whether a child has a communication disorder. Individual assessment is required for clinical recommendations.

Questions families ask

Do I need a referral?

A referral is generally not required for private speech-language services. Check your extended-health plan for reimbursement requirements.

Is therapy suitable for every child?

The right format depends on assessment findings, goals, age and family priorities. An initial conversation helps determine fit.

Can we attend virtually?

Virtual services may be available across BC when appropriate for the child and goals.
