Stuttering & Fluency Therapy

Stuttering may include repetitions, prolongations or blocks. The impact is different for every child, so therapy considers communication comfort, participation and feelings—not only observable fluency.

When to seek guidance

An assessment is appropriate when stuttering persists, increases, includes visible tension or avoidance, concerns the child, or causes family worry. Early consultation can replace uncertainty with useful support.

A supportive approach

Therapy may include education, reducing time pressure, strengthening communication confidence and teaching speech-management strategies when appropriate. We avoid framing every stutter as a failure.

Supporting communication at home

Helpful responses include listening to the message, taking relaxed turns and allowing the child to finish. Families receive individualized guidance rather than generic instructions to slow down or take a breath.

What happens first

We begin by learning about the concern, the child’s strengths, relevant history and the situations where communication is easiest or hardest. Recommendations are individualized after that conversation or assessment.

Educational information only: This page cannot determine whether a child has a communication disorder. Individual assessment is required for clinical recommendations.

Questions families ask

Do I need a referral?

A referral is generally not required for private speech-language services. Check your extended-health plan for reimbursement requirements.

Is therapy suitable for every child?

The right format depends on assessment findings, goals, age and family priorities. An initial conversation helps determine fit.

Can we attend virtually?

Virtual services may be available across BC when appropriate for the child and goals.
