Speech & Language Assessments

A speech-language assessment helps families understand a child’s current communication profile. It combines parent input, observation, play-based tasks and standardized measures when appropriate.

What an assessment can explore

Assessment may look at understanding and using language, speech sound production, intelligibility, social communication, fluency, voice, oral-motor skills and functional communication across settings.

What you receive

We explain findings in plain language, identify priorities, and recommend a realistic plan. When a written report is part of the service, it summarizes results and recommendations that can support collaboration with school or other providers.

Preparing for the appointment

Bring relevant reports, hearing information and examples of communication concerns. Tell us what is working as well as what feels hard. A favourite toy or comfort item can help younger children settle in.

What happens first

We begin by learning about the concern, the child’s strengths, relevant history and the situations where communication is easiest or hardest. Recommendations are individualized after that conversation or assessment.

Educational information only: This page cannot determine whether a child has a communication disorder. Individual assessment is required for clinical recommendations.

Questions families ask

Do I need a referral?

A referral is generally not required for private speech-language services. Check your extended-health plan for reimbursement requirements.

Is therapy suitable for every child?

The right format depends on assessment findings, goals, age and family priorities. An initial conversation helps determine fit.

Can we attend virtually?

Virtual services may be available across BC when appropriate for the child and goals.
