Autism Communication & AAC Support

Communication is more than spoken words. We support autistic children and other communicators with respectful, strengths-based goals and access to augmentative and alternative communication when helpful.

Communication on the child’s terms

Therapy can support self-advocacy, shared understanding, functional language, interaction and regulation without teaching a child to hide autistic traits or perform eye contact. The goal is effective, authentic communication.

AAC is a valid voice

AAC can include gestures, pictures, communication boards and speech-generating devices. It may supplement speech or serve as a primary way to communicate. Access does not require a child to prove readiness.

Partner training matters

Communication partners shape access. Families and teams learn to model language on the system, allow enough processing time, respond to all communication forms and make AAC available throughout the day.

What happens first

We begin by learning about the concern, the child’s strengths, relevant history and the situations where communication is easiest or hardest. Recommendations are individualized after that conversation or assessment.

Educational information only: This page cannot determine whether a child has a communication disorder. Individual assessment is required for clinical recommendations.

Questions families ask

Do I need a referral?

A referral is generally not required for private speech-language services. Check your extended-health plan for reimbursement requirements.

Is therapy suitable for every child?

The right format depends on assessment findings, goals, age and family priorities. An initial conversation helps determine fit.

Can we attend virtually?

Virtual services may be available across BC when appropriate for the child and goals.
