Parent Coaching for Communication

Children communicate throughout the day. Parent coaching helps caregivers recognize opportunities, adjust interaction and practise strategies in the moments that matter most.

What coaching looks like

The clinician demonstrates a strategy, observes a short interaction and offers supportive feedback. Together, we choose one or two changes that are realistic for the coming week.

Why everyday routines matter

Repeated routines create predictable opportunities for language. Getting dressed, snacks, bath time, outdoor play and favourite books can all support turn-taking, vocabulary and sentence development.

Collaborative and realistic

The plan should fit your family. We consider the child’s interests, sensory needs, culture, languages and caregiver capacity rather than assigning a long list of disconnected exercises.

What happens first

We begin by learning about the concern, the child’s strengths, relevant history and the situations where communication is easiest or hardest. Recommendations are individualized after that conversation or assessment.

Educational information only: This page cannot determine whether a child has a communication disorder. Individual assessment is required for clinical recommendations.

Questions families ask

Do I need a referral?

A referral is generally not required for private speech-language services. Check your extended-health plan for reimbursement requirements.

Is therapy suitable for every child?

The right format depends on assessment findings, goals, age and family priorities. An initial conversation helps determine fit.

Can we attend virtually?

Virtual services may be available across BC when appropriate for the child and goals.
